My kitchen sink drain/garbage disposal is clogged with potato peels. How do I unclog?

My daughter clogged the kitchen sink drain/garbage disposal with potato peels. How do I unclog? HELP!!

Currently, water is slightly backed up in both sides of our double sink. I tried to run the garbage disposal which temporarily shifts the water to the opposite sink. Same thing happens when I use a toilet plunger to unclog the sink. (water shifts from one side to another)

What can I do to get the sink unclogged? I've got lots of cooking to do for my son's graduation party this Saturday.

Thanks in advance for your responses.

An added note: the disposal is not jammed…it runs just fine but it efforts seem ineffective.

my best course of action is to take it apart and clean the potato peels out

use a rag or something that you can plug the drain on one side and use the plunger on the other side. it should do the trick

If the garbage disposal won't run get a broom and use the handle down in the disposal and try to dislodge the cutters. It's always worked for me. Now they give you a little wrench to use on the bottom of the disposal to dislodge, but that is a pretty new feature.

    Good Luck

Once you dislodge it run it with lots of water going into the drain.

When I get to much in my disposal I take the rubber piece out and stick my hand in and pull out as much as I can out and throw it away and then loosen up the remaining peelsPut back in the rubber piece.
Run water in and see if that will work.

you can use an Allen Wrench under the garbage disposal to turn the cutter blade…or maybe you have the original key that comes with the disposer…you can put your hand in the hole and pull the peels out…there is also a Reset button on the bottom and you can check you see it you need to push the button to reset it..if it pulled too many Amps while trying to run…and dont believe anyone who say you need to run cold water in it to keep it from getting too hot…thats only for old disposers..my grandmother used to work in a school kitchen..and she said they used to put broken glass down the diposer to sharpen the blades..but those were commercial grade disposers..i wouldn't try that in a household disposer…

First unplug or turn off the power, reach down in the drain opening, and remove as much of the obstruction as possible. Then use the tool that comes with all disposal units, and go inside cabinet, under the sinc, and insert the tool in the bottom of the motor and start to manually rotate the motor with the WATER ON, and see if the drain starts working, if it wont drain, then the drain trap is plugged. If the drain flows, turn the power back on, and run the disposal with the water on for about 3 minutes to make sure you clear out the entire drain!!! AUTO TECH 22 YEARS!!!
